What All Do Windshields Do?

OK! Time to learn something! Today we’re going to look at windshields and what their overall purpose is in a car. Windshields are a constantly evolving fixture in cars, and they provide many safety benefits along with reducing possible annoyances.

The most obvious purpose of the windshield is the way that it keeps the elements out of your face. The wind and the rain and harmful impacts by flying debris are all kept out by the windshield. However, the glass also has other important safety purposes in modern cars!

1-Windshields were first implemented in cars in the early 1900’s.

2-Henry Ford was the first to use the laminated glass technology that is used o this day, which utilized two layers of glass with a layer of cellulose fitted in between them.

3-Modern windshields use this technology, but have been further engineered to crack and spider the glass when a force is encountered.

4-The windshield actually adds to the overall stability of the car, because it reinforces the frame and acts as a cushioning energy buffer in the case of a rollover.

It turns out that the windshield is a pretty essential part of a modern car. Not only does it keep you safe from flying debris and temperature extremes outside, but it also adds to the overall durability of the car itself. It has been specifically engineered to crack, chip, and spider without hurting the person behind the wheel.

Make sure to take care of your windshield, because it is taking care of you!
